Water Softener vs. Salt-Free Conditioner

The practical difference between ion-exchange softeners and salt-free conditioners for hard water.

By FilterWise Home Editorial Team · Last updated · How we research

What a softener does

Ion-exchange softeners swap calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium, reducing measured hardness. They need salt, a drain, and periodic regeneration.

What a conditioner does

Salt-free conditioners, often using template-assisted crystallization, aim to reduce scale formation. They generally do not lower measured hardness.

Choosing between them

If you want measurably soft water, a salt-based softener is the standard choice. If you mainly want less scale and no salt, a conditioner may fit. Check local rules — some areas restrict salt-discharge softeners.
